My strategy is to look at the top of your screen for a landmark and then go straight left until you find the landmark again. Then move 1 screen down, look for another landmark, and repeat till you find the dot. To make a landmark, go down till a piece of the world (say a slab) is only slightly in view and then memorize how it looks (like if it's facing right or left).
