OK. What you would want to do then is to:
- Create a blank map (or one with solid black tiles.)
- Make sure the starting party is blank with no characters/actors.
- Put the player start position in the blank map.
- Create an Autorun event that does the following:
- Ask the player to select a character
- Fade out the screen
- Add the chosen character to the party
- Transfers the player to the character's intended starting place (In most fangames, that would be the character's bedroom in the waking world.)
- Fade in the screen
