.xyz files are picture files that can be read by RPG Maker. Unless you're trying to open/look at those images (in which case, you'd need to open the game in RPG Maker to do that) your game should run just fine.
As for what version .2.6 adds, I'm not sure if any new areas were added, but there's a new minigame event and some graphical updates I believe.
