Overview

Ultra Violet is another Yume Nikki fan-game; produced by gozo-ropp (Pixiv)

It revolves around a young girl known as Sometsuki who explores her dreams while sleeping, she also appears to be a sleep-walker. Like many other protagonists, attempting to leave her room just results of a quick shake of the head and some sounds.

Ultra Violet strays on the lighter side of the spectrum -- one of the primary visual motifs being rabbits, for example -- with the exception of a handful of violent or suspenseful areas.

The game has been met with fairly positive reception for its spritework and a few of its locales, such as the Library. However, it has been criticized for a number of so-called "lazy" maps -- large, relatively difficult-to-navigate expanses -- and those which pay an obvious homage to the original Yume Nikki (there is a Rave World, Snow World, an Aztec Forest, and even a Puzzle World with a candy palette bearing striking resemblence to Poniko's dimension).

Gameplay

Ultra Violet follows the traditional style of the genre, consisting of exploration and effect-hunting, but in addition plays up the collectibility of selectable menu skins, an aspect only briefly touched upon by the fandom's larger titles.

Menus:

  • Violet- Default menu
  • Silver- Another starting menu on the computer.
  • Monochrome- Another starting menu from the computer.
  • Old black- Found in the 8bit world in the rabbit school in a chest.
  • Orange- Found by talking to the NPC in the Snow World with blond hair in twintails and an orange and silver striped scarf.
  • Hexe Violett - An arabesque menu in lavender. Found by viewing the Flying Witch event.
  • Hexe - An arabesque menu in tan. Found by standing on the red rune circle on the floor in the Magic Room.

The protagonist saves via use of a computer with movable cursor, similar to those in The Looking Glass and Me. From here the various menus can be selected and the player can save the game.  Like Yume Nikki, in the dream world, sitting on Sometsuki's rolling chair and pressing the interact key while sitting facing the computer will allow you to move about in her chair! Unlike Yume Nikki, the chair does not reduce your speed at all, but you are unable to use effects until you return the chair.

Plot

Not much is know about why Sometsuki refuses to go outside, or much about her dreams, but they are rather light,(save for a few worlds, and some events) so it is possible there is something she wants to escape from, or doesn't want to face (similar to LCD Dem 's plot). However, the game is still at 0.03, and no endings have been implemented yet, and a lot more events will most likely be in later versions of the game.

Effects

  • Rabbit- Sometsuki grows rabbit ears and a tail. Pressing SHIFT turns Sometsuki into a rabbit and increases her speed! Buy this effect in the Supermarket.
  • Headless- Sometsuki's head is chopped off, leaving her with a bloody neck. Waking up makes her pinch her neck instead of her cheeks. This effect is found in the Detached Body World.
  • Witch- Sometsuki wears a witch's robe and her hair becomes two braids. Pressing SHIFT lets her ride her broomstick which increases her speed! Found in the library, in the Magic Room.
  • Lampost- Sometsuki's head becomes a lampost head. Pressing SHIFT switchs the light on to a soft green-blue, and other lamposts that are off will switch on. This is found in lampost world.
  • Hammer- Somestuki's weapon. Found in the experiment room by completing a puzzle and opening the cabinet with the body inside.
  • Cake- Sometsuki becomes a walking slice of strawbery shortcake.
  • Winter Coat- Sometsuki bundles up in a brown winter coat. Found in Block World.
  • Short Hair-Sometuski's hair is shorter.
  • Pig Tails - Gives Sometsuki cute pigtails. Found in the FC Building.
  • Egg- Sometsuki becomes a walking egg, with only her face peeking though a cracked face in the middle. Pressing SHIFT warps you back to the nexus.
  • Robot - Sometsuki becomes an android. Find this effect in the Space Station.
  • Miko - Sometsuki dresses as a shrine maiden.
  • Shikkenken - Sometsuki becomes a winter youkai. Her feet are bound by the cold, so she hops very slowly. She wears a blue yukata and can make it snow with the SHIFT key. Found in the Snow World by talking to the Shikkenken. Using this effect in the Snow World will cause the Shikkenken to follow you around.

Additionally, an additional "effect" can be purchased from the Supermarket for 1000 coins: the ability to save inside the dream. Interestingly enough, while 300 coins can be found in and around the area for buying the Rabbit effect easily and at least an additional 300 can be salvaged from cabinets in the FC Rabbit Town, the easiest way to procure sufficient funds for the purchase is to repeatedly murder the shopkeeper and raid the cash register. Whether this is intentional symbolism or we're all just bastards has yet to be determined.

Technical Difficulties

There is a known issue where downloading the game under the English locale will cause all of the files to be improperly named, resulting in the game being completely unplayable. To mitigate this issue, potential players must first set their locale to Japanese (not through applocale, but through the Windows Control Panel) and then download and run the game.
