N'Oubliez Jamais is a fangame. You play as Al Ree, a young boy who, according to the menu screen, is a "prophet". Unlike most other main characters, he isn't a hikikomori, and he does have parents. He is free to explore the front part of his apartment building and a side alley.

This fangame works quite unlike any others. Instead of exploring a set dream world, you have different mini-game like environments for you to explore. The way it works is like this: When you go to bed, you are transported to an area. You may have to put out a fire, or explore a maze. Depending on what you do, when the dream ends, you get one of four memories. The four memory types are:

The ending is determined on whichever type you get 5 of each for, without exception. For instance, let's say you get 4 Happy memories, but then you get 5 Cruel Memories first. You'd still get the Cruel Ending first, because you got 5 of them.

Overview

N'Oubliez Jamais (lit. Never Forget) is an English Yume Nikki fangame made by Perverse Suffering, known for its unique, realistic approach to the dream system. As opposed to having a single, interconnected dream world, the player is randomly placed in a linear set of locations, the end of the dream depending on the choices of the player. This system of short, random activities is comparable Nintendo's WarioWare game series.

During a period of uploading screenshots for a potential update on Uboachan, Perverse Suffering disappeared for multiple months, returning on April 23rd, 2013 to announce the game's cancellation. The game was developed in RPG Maker 2003.

Gameplay

As mentioned above, N'Oubliez Jamais sends the player to a random location with a scripted event. The players actions (or how deep they go into the dream sequence) give them a different type of memory at the end of the dream:

  • Cruel
  • Happy
  • Rage
  • Illusion

The ending of the game is determined by the first type of memory the player collects 5 memories for, regardless of the amount of other memory types.

Controls

  • Move - Arrow Keys
  • Interact/Select - Z/Space/Enter
  • Open Menu/Cancel - X/C/Esc

Plot

The game stars Al Ree, a young boy described as a prophet by the menu screen (evidenced by his dreams affecting reality).

Al Ree, unlike many protagonists, lives in a three-room apartment with his parents and cat, and is able to exit his home. Strangely enough, exiting the main room of the apartment leads directly outside the complex and onto the street, either implying they are on the first floor with immediate access to the outdoors in lieu of a lobby or that the designer chose to omit traversing the rest of the building altogether. The adjacent street and alleyway available are featureless and gray, but may be modified gradually by collecting memories.

Effects

Unlike other fangames, effects are not equippable and are assigned to the player based on their current dream.

Footnotes

  1. A piece of his head floats above him as a bug, due to Charset size limitations and the head being placed as an event in the map.
