Effects Guide
Thunderbird
Become the mythological bird.
Appearance: Nathan transforms into a mythological bird.
Passive Effect: Nathan's movement speed is doubled.
Action: (Shift) None.
Location: Found in the Neon Laser Zone.
Practical Uses: Allows Nathan to travel faster.
Go south from the phone booth and enter the purple door to Neon Laser Zone. It is quite difficult to navigate this area as the monsters shoot lasers that will hurt Nathan if they hit him. Go directly south until you see a neon silhouette of a child surrounded by flowers. Find an opening (avoid the lasers as best as you can) to the path. In the middle of the path, Nathan will be teleported to a different path that has a row of laser-shooting monsters. Carefully go up the path and go through the yellow door. Step on the square at the end of the next path. Interact with the egg to receive the effect.
Coat
Keep warm by wrapping up in a coat.
Appearance: Nathan wears a hefty coat.
Passive Effect: Allows Nathan to traverse extremely cold environments.
Action: (Shift) Puts on/takes off the hood on the coat.
Location: Found by interacting with the old man in his cabin.
Practical Uses: Able to travel in cold environments.
Go south from the phone booth and go west to end up in Snow World. Avoid the snowman's snowball throwing while going south. In the next area, head west and go inside the cabin. Talk with the old man in the blue coat to receive the effect.
Pumpkin
Trick-or-treat!
Appearance: Nathan becomes a jack-o-lantern with feet.
Passive Effect: When activated, Nathan can light up dark places.
Action: (Shift) Turns on or off the light from the jack-o-lantern's eyes and mouth.
Location: Found in the 8-bit Cemetery.
Practical Uses: Can brighten up dark places.
Route 1: (Requires Ghost effect)
Go south from the phone booth and go east to the City Roofs. Take the north path and use the Ghost effect to turn invisible and get through the iron gate. Take the path to the right and go down the ladder to the sewers. Go straight down to the Subway Station. (While here, you may want to obtain the Balloon effect.)
Route 2: (Requires Scythe effect)
Go west from the phone booth and when you get to a fork in the path, go east to Forest Grove. Go in between the Tikis. Moles will pop up from the ground as you walk up the next path, so equip the Scythe effect to kill them. Climb down to the sewer. Go east and then south to the Subway Station. (While here, you may want to obtain the Balloon effect.)
(Continued from either Route 1 or 2) (Requires Balloon effect) Go up the staircase to the Mall. Follow the Directory to go all the way north and east. Use the Balloon effect to float over the huge gap in the floor and avoid the spike balls. Keep going right and then take the east path at the end of it. Keep going on the path and then go through the path and the door to the north. Interact with the console to go into 8-bit Field. Go out of the house and south towards the Cemetery. Make your way through the trees and gravestones and interact with the pumpkin to receive the effect.
Baseball Cap
Wear a red baseball cap.
Appearance: Nathan wears a red baseball cap.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Can warp to an 8-bit baseball field and unlock a bonus sound test when all effects are collected (glitched?).
Location: Found in the 8-bit House.
Practical Uses: None.
Follow the Pumpkin effect route until you reach the 8-bit Field. Instead of going south, go west to another house. Inside, interact with the baseball cap to receive the effect.
Balloon
Puff up to become an ominous balloon.
Appearance: Nathan becomes a blue hot-air balloon.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) None.
Location: Found in the Subway Station.
Practical Uses: Can float over large gaps to new areas.
Follow the guide to the Pumpkin effect until the Subway Station. Take the next staircase over to the right and interact with the boy on the bench to receive the effect.
Scythe
An ordinary scythe. Makes a good weapon.
Appearance: Nathan holds a scythe.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Can transform into the Grim Reaper and back.
Location: Found at the Train Tracks in the Forest.
Practical Uses: Can kill many NPCs, including chasers.
Go west from the phone booth to the Forest. Go west to the Train Tracks. See the Scythe event and then interact with the grim reaper and then the scythe to receive the effect.
Alien
Become a creature from a distant planet.
Appearance: Nathan becomes a green one-eyed alien with brown hair and antennae with an eye on each of them.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Can return to the nexus by holding Shift.
Location: Found in the Abandoned Warehouse.
Practical Uses: Can quickly return to the starting point in Nathan's dream world.
From the phone booth, head east and go inside the Abandoned Warehouse. From here go south, west, and down the set of stairs. Go down the diagonal staircase to the west. Head north up the path and interact with the alien in the capsule to receive the effect.
Toilet
Don't be a potty mouth.
Appearance: Nathan becomes a walking toilet.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Can drain small bodies of water and make a flushing noise.
Location: Found in one of the bathrooms in the Mall.
Practical Uses: Can drain the lake in Native Hills and reveal the way to the Butterfly effect.
(Requires Balloon effect.) Follow the guide to the Pumpkin effect until you reach the Mall. Use the Balloon effect to cross the gap with the spiked balls. Enter the bathrooms on the end of the path and interact with the toilet in the last stall to receive the effect.
Ghost
Become a ghost.
Appearance: Nathan takes the appearance of a hooded, shadowy ghost. He also carries a lantern.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Can turn invisible except for the lantern and back, and also do a maniacal laugh.
Location: Found in the City Roofs.
Practical Uses: Can turn invisible, allowing for phasing through a few certain barriers.
From the phone booth, go south and then east to the City Roofs. take the east path and climb up the ladder. Interact with the purple will-o-the-wisp to receive the effect.
Sand
Turn into sand.
Appearance: Nathan's body becomes made of sand, his lower body is just a sand mountain.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Stops movement of NPCs. Pressing it again will make them move again.
Location: Found in the Desert.
Practical Uses: Chasers can be avoided using this effect.
Follow the guide to the Pumpkin effect until you reach the Subway Station. Take the staircase all the way to the east to the Desert. Avoid the vultures as best as you can (it's best to have full HP before visiting this area) and head south. Step up to the platform to receive the effect.
White Buffalo
It's considered good luck by some people.
Appearance: Nathan wears what appears to be traditional Native American clothes.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Makes snow fall. Pressing it again stops the snow.
Location: Found in the Blizzard Area.
Practical Uses: Can freeze the Native Hills' lake and you can find a box with money inside on the ice.
Follow the guide to the Coat effect and go outside through the cabin while wearing that effect. Do not take the effect off or else Nathan will freeze and warp back to the cabin. Go all the way north and interact with the blue fire to receive the effect.
Girl
Makes you look like a girl.
Appearance: Nathan grows his hair longer, has ribbons, and wears a skirt.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Makes Nathan curtsy.
Location: Found in Heidi's bedroom in the Library.
Practical Uses: None.
From the phone booth, go east and down through the opening in the gate and go east. Go inside the building and interact with the pool on the altar. Go outside to the Village. Head a little bit east and south and enter the cave. Inside, pull the lever. The spike blocking another path will go down but another spike will block your exit. At this point, either use the Alien effect or wake up and come back to find the spike still blocking the lever, allowing you to move on to the next area. Enter the building to the Library. Go inside the blue and pink door to Heidi's room. Interact with the display mannequin to receive the effect.
Tiki Mask
Wear a tribal tiki mask.
Appearance: Nathan wears a tiki mask and a grass skirt.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Nathan does a dance and summons rainfall. Pressing it again stops the rain.
Location: Found in the 8-bit Island.
Practical Uses: None.
Follow the guide to the Girl effect and interact with the console to go into the 8-bit Ocean. Go all the way east and climb out of the ocean to the 8-bit Island. Go north into the Tiki Village. Interact with the flashing tiki mask to receive the effect.
Heart
Become a disembodied heart.
Appearance: Nathan transforms into a bleeding, mobile heart.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Nathan splashes blood at the screen, also fully restores HP.
Location: Found in the Hospital.
Practical Uses: Can fully restore lost HP three times per dream/call session.
From the phone booth, go east and enter the Abandoned Warehouse. From here, go east, north, east, and go up the stairs to the Hospital. Go inside the second door from the far left and turn off the heart monitor to receive the effect.
Lynx
Attain the ability to see the unseeable.
Appearance: Nathan becomes a gray lynx.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Flashes the screen with a buzzing sound effect. May reveal hidden paths.
Location: Found in Purple Trivia Zone.
Practical Uses: If you see a paw print in an area, using the Lynx's Shift Action near it will reveal a secret path.
Follow the guide to the Girl effect until you reach the Library. Keep heading north and find a Customer Service desk. Interact with it to be teleported to Purple Trivia Zone. On the path, you will meet three trivia question marks who will ask you questions. Getting a question wrong will cost you an HP point. The answers are B, C, and C. Continue on the path. Interact with the wooden pole to receive the effect.
Feather Headdress
Wear a feather headdress.
Appearance: Nathan wears what appears to be traditional Native American clothes.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) None.
Location: Found in one of the tepees in Native Hills, costs $1000 to buy.
Practical Uses: None.
(Requires seeing the Dog event to obtain $1000.) From the phone booth, go east and down through the opening in the gate and go east. Go inside the building and interact with the pool on the altar. Go outside to the Village. Go south to the cave then go west and climb to a tepee. Inside there will be an NPC who will offer Nathan the effect for $1000. Pay that to receive the effect.
Mohawk
Grow a mohawk.
Appearance: Nathan grows a mohawk.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Can put on a motorcycle helmet and take it off.
Location: Found when viewing the Mohawk event in the School.
Practical Uses: None.
Follow the guide to the Girl effect until you reach the Library. Keep going north towards the middle of the area and go through the gray door to the Purple Star Library. Keep going and go through the black door to the School. Go downstairs until you reach the last classroom before the big double doors near the end of the hallway. Go inside the last classroom and interact with the Mohawk Kid NPC to view the Mohawk event and to receive the effect.
Guitar
Play an acoustic guitar.
Appearance: Nathan holds a guitar.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) If a checkpoint is saved, playing the guitar will warp Nathan to that checkpoint.
Location: Found in the Abandoned School's Music Room Closet.
Practical Uses: Having the effect will allow Nathan to save checkpoints by interacting with Music Notes.
(Requires Ghost effect.) Follow the guide to the Mohawk effect until you reach the School. Instead of going inside the last classroom, keep going east and go south to the Music Room. Go into the closet and grab the Room 614 Key. Go back to where you first entered the School and unlock the classroom to the right of the double doors. Interact with the lever to be warped to the Abandoned School. In this area, there are plant traps and monsters everywhere, so travel with extreme caution and use the Ghost effect to sneak by the monsters without disturbing them. Make your way back to the Music Room's Closet and interact with the boy trapped in the plants to view an event and receive the effect.
Vacuum
Become a vacuum.
Appearance: Nathan becomes a purple vacuum cleaner with eyes.
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Nathan sucks up air, attracting NPCs.
Location: Found in the Foggy Woods.
Practical Uses: None.
(Requires Ghost and Balloon effects) From the phone booth, go south and then go west to the Snow World. Avoid the snowman's snowball throwing as you go south. Use the Balloon effect to go up the hill east. Head east past the ladder and climb up to the highway and go east. In the Forest, make your way down and under the bridge to the Foggy Woods. At the T-junction in the road, use the Ghost effect to sneak past the stone statue to the east, who will shoot you if you're in its line of sight. Continue east and go north off the road. Interact with the giant vacuum cleaner to receive the effect.
Butterfly
Appearance: Nathan becomes a small Monarch butterfly
Passive Effect: None.
Action: (Shift) Plays an animation.
Location: Found in the Swamp.
Practical Uses: None.
(Requires Toilet and Balloon effects.) From the phone booth, go east and down through the opening in the gate and go east. Go inside the building and interact with the pool on the altar. Go outside to the Village. Use the Toilet effect to drain the water. Go down the ladder and enter the now-uncovered building. Use the Balloon effect to float over the large gap in the floor to the next area. In the Swamp, use the Balloon effect again, to traverse the area faster. Be very careful when traveling this area, as there are many insects that can hurt Nathan. Once at the end of the path, interact with the flowers to receive the effect.

Ev. #00: Introduction
Obtained after seeing the game's introductory sequence.
Ev. #01: Scythe
Obtained when getting the Scythe effect.
Ev. #02: Laura
Follow the Effects guide to the School. Use the double doors to the north of where you came in. Follow the path to the Menu Changing Room. Go in the unlocked gray door to the southwest and go north out of the room and into the Barricaded School. Take the big exit to the east to the Park. Sit on the bench next to the woman to see the event.
Ev. #03: Hospital
Follow the Heart effect's guide to the Hospital. Take the north hallway to the east of the entrance and go on three elevators to a lone hospital bed. Interact with the top side of the bed to see the event.
Ev. #04: Schoolyard
(Unobtainable due to a bug?)
Ev. #05: Dog
Follow the Vacuum effect guide to the Forest. Instead of going under the bridge to the Foggy Woods, continue on the road and go through an opening in the trees. Nathan will find an Old Dog Whistle on the path. Continue on the path until you find a dog to see the event. After the event, the dog will drop a bag full of money ($1000) needed to buy the Feather Headdress effect.
Ev. #06: Mohawk
Obtained when getting the Mohawk effect.
Ev. #07: Friends
Follow the Guitar effect guide to the Abandoned School. Find the classroom to where you would have gotten the Mohawk effect if it was the regular School and interact with the hand mirror to see the event.
Ev. #08: Theatre
(Requires at least $2) Follow the Pumpkin effect guide to the Mall and follow the Directory to the Movie Theatre. Pay for a ticket with $2 and sit down on a seat to see the event.
Ev. #09: Autumn

Ev. #10: Shooting Stars
(Unobtainable due to a missing map error.)
Ev. #11: Home
Follow the Mohawk effect guide until you reach the Purple Star Library. Find an opening that goes south and go down the stairs after going in it to the Garden. Find a pink flower on a cobblestone platform and interact with it to see the event.
Ev. #12: Guitar
Obtained when getting the Guitar effect.
Ev. #13: Drew & Amy
(Requires Balloon effect) Follow the guide to the White Buffalo effect until you reach the Blizzard. There is a box on one of the side paths. Open it to receive the Snow House Key. Go all the way back to the hill with the gap and use the Balloon effect to climb it. Instead of climbing up to the bridge in the next area, go under it to the Snow House. Use the key to unlock the door. Explore all the rooms to see a brother and sister go into the master bedroom. Interact with the snow globe to see the event.
Ev. #14: Boiler Room
Collect 15 effects and unlock the Boiler Room in the real world with them. Open the boiler to enter the event. To kill the shadow monsters, be very careful with your timing. Attempt to enter the door to the north to finish the event.
Ending
After hanging up upon collecting all 20 effects, the staircase up in the real world will "unlock". Go upstairs and climb the water tower to see the ending.
