Overview

Ultra Violet is another Yume Nikki fan-game produced by gozo-ropp (Pixiv).

It revolves around a young girl known as Sometsuki who explores her dreams while sleeping; she also appears to be a sleep-walker according to the writing "Sleep-Walker (夢遊病) next to her name. Like many other protagonists, attempting to leave her room just results of a quick shake of the head and some sounds.

Ultra Violet strays on the lighter side of the spectrum - one of the primary visual motifs being rabbits, for example -- with the exception of a handful of violent or suspenseful areas.

Gameplay

Ultra Violet follows the traditional style of the genre, consisting of exploration and effect-hunting, but in addition plays up the collectibility of selectable menu skins, an aspect only briefly touched upon by other games.

Menus:

  1. Violet - Default menu.
  2. Silver - Another starting menu on the computer.
  3. Monochrome - Another starting menu from the computer.
  4. Orange - Found by talking to the NPC in the Snow World with blond hair in twintails and an orange and silver striped scarf.
  5. Cookie - A pattern composed of cookies on a pink background. Found on the outside of the cookie cave.
  6. Hexe - An arabesque menu in tan. Found by standing on the red rune circle on the floor in the Magic Room (after lighting the 5 candles in the library).
  7. Old black - The menu which is used in Famicom world, it is obtained automatically by entering it.
  8. Old blue - Found in the Famicom world in the rabbit school in a chest.
  9. Hexe Violett - An arabesque menu in lavender. Found by viewing the Flying Witch event.
  10. Violet II - A checkered violet menu, unlocked after you play the mini-game on the computer.
  11. Green - A checkered green menu with white font. Found by interacting with the girl in the light green room.

The protagonist saves via use of a computer with movable cursor, similar to those in The Looking Glass and Me. From here the player can save the game, various menus can be selected and a mini-game can be played.  Like Yume Nikki, in the dream world, sitting on Sometsuki's rolling chair and pressing the interact key while sitting facing the computer will allow you to move about in her chair! Unlike Yume Nikki, the chair does not reduce your speed at all, but you are unable to use effects until you return the chair.

Plot

Not much is know about why Sometsuki refuses to go outside, or much about her dreams, but they are rather light, (except for a few worlds and some events) so it is possible there is something she wants to escape from, or doesn't want to face (similar to Lcd Dem's plot). However, the game is still at v0.04, no endings have been implemented yet, and a lot more events will most likely be in later versions of the game.

Effects

Name Image Description
Rabbit (うさぎ)
UvEff1.png
Sometsuki grows white rabbit ears and a tail. Pressing SHIFT turns Sometsuki into a small albino rabbit that increases her speed. When in Famicom World, the rabbit has violet eyes instead of red ones.
Headless (くびなし)
UvEff07.png
Sometsuki's head is missing, leaving her with a bloody neck. Pressing Shift toggles the neck bloody/not bloody. Trying to wake up in this form makes Sometsuki pinch her neck instead of her cheeks.
Magician (まほうつかい)
UvEff5.png
Sometsuki wears a witch's robe and her hair becomes two braids. Pressing SHIFT lets her ride her broomstick which increases her speed. Also used for the witch flight event.
Lampost (ほうでんとう)
UvEff8.png
Sometsuki's head becomes a lampost head. Pressing SHIFT switches the light on to a soft green-blue, and other lamposts that are off will switch on.
Nail Hammer (ネイルハンマー)
UvEff2.png
Sometsuki's weapon.
Cake (ケーキ)
UvEff3.png
Sometsuki becomes a walking slice of strawberry shortcake. Pressing SHIFT causes her to put the cake on the ground, hiding her feet. She cannot move till you press SHIFT again. Also, some NPCs will treat you differently when this effect is equipped.
Coat and Muffler (コートとマフラー)
UvEff4.png
Sometsuki bundles up in a brown winter coat, a striped scarf and gloves.
Egg (たまご)
UvEff10.png
Sometsuki becomes a walking egg, with only her face peeking though a cracked face in the middle. Pressing SHIFT closes up the egg, and warps you back to the nexus.
Android (アンドロイド)
UvEff9.png
Sometsuki becomes an android.
Short Hair (ショートヘアー)
UvEff6.png
Sometsuki's hair is cut short.
Miko (みこ)
UvEff13.png
Sometsuki dresses as a shrine maiden.
Shikkenken (しっけんけん)
UvEff11.png
Sometsuki becomes a winter youkai. Her feet are bound by the cold, so she hops very slowly. She wears a blue yukata and can make it snow with the SHIFT key. Using this effect in the Snow World will cause the Shikkenken to follow you around.
Ribbons/Pigtails (リボン)
UvEff12.png
Gives Sometsuki cute pigtails tied with ribbons.
Sea Hare (アメフラシ)
UvEff14.png
Sometsuki becomes a violet sea hare (sea slug). Pressing SHIFT when on land makes her release a small pink cloud and it starts to rain. Pressing SHIFT when underwater just causes her to make a sound. Some NPCs will treat you differently when this effect is equipped.

Additionally, another "effect" can be purchased from the Supermarket for 1000 coins: the ability to save inside the dream. The easiest way to procure sufficient funds for the purchase is to repeatedly murder the shopkeeper and raid the cash register. (Though other ways of gaining money are still available, such as searching for coins or killing NPCs.)

Technical Difficulties

There is a known issue where downloading the game under the English locale will cause all of the files to be improperly named, resulting in the game being completely unplayable. To mitigate this issue, potential players must first set their locale to Japanese (not through AppLocale, but through the Windows Control Panel) and then download and run the game.
